If there is anything that epitomizes spring, it is tiny green leaf peeping out of the soil. A seedling encapsulates sunshine after the cold, living things, and the turn of the season. These little plant starts are seeded indoors, a few weeks before the last frost of the season. Simply start with a tray, fill it with damp potting mix, sprinkle a few seeds in each cup, and just barely cover with soil. Place in a warm sunny spot and keep the soil moist. Wait patiently. Wait some more. Eventually, a stem (or three!) will slowly peek it’s head out above the soil. In a few weeks, you can take the clumps of soil and roots and plant them into a larger pot or directly in the ground.
If you like me, would not identify at all as gardener, may I urge you to give it a try this spring? Just a few small seedlings! Head to your local hardware store or garden store, grab a tray or two, potting mix, and seeds. I’m focusing on just a few herbs (chives, mint, tarragon and cilantro) but I would urge you to pick a couple of plants that sound interesting and doable to you. You’ll only need a small amount of seeds, so you can close the seed packet back up and keep it in a safe place for next spring.
Are you growing anything this year? Anything you’re considering? Go for it. Let’s give it a try together.
